Perception of Culture – Culture of Perception

„If the doors of perception were cleansed
everything would appear to man as it is, infinite.”
William Blake

The question of perception holds a very prominent place in the modern culture. On the one hand, constant technological progress forces people to change the manner in which they experience reality while their cognitive and aesthetic sensitivity is being reshaped. These changes nurture the development of a new type of perception of works of culture, which becomes more and more interesting not only for humanists but also representatives of sciences researching the phenomenon of human brain. Art endeavors to fully tap into the potential of interactivity, in a broad sense of this term, while media and technology industry base their activities on the degree in which this potential influences human perception. Thus, „the culture of perception” covers nowadays not only the area of artistic activity but also economy, scientific research, and emerging technologies.

As a result, academics interested in the changes the modern culture is going through should point their keen eyes and instruments towards this evolution and investigate it. This conference aims at confronting different research approaches concerning the role of perception in the modern culture and science. We wish to gain abroader perspective on the reception of cultural phenomena, to investigate the changes which arose in the way humans experience the world and to blaze new trails for those researching perception. We would like address the invitation to this conference primarily to young academic: PhD students and PhD holders who would like to share their thoughts with us. We are interested in an interdisciplinary approach, therefore, we would like to invite both humanists (experts in cultural studies, philologists, sociologists, psychologists, philosophers) and representatives of sciences (neurobiologists, physicists, computer scientists).

We would like to focus the discussion on the following areas:

·         * perception as a cognitive process
·         * influence of an art piece on the recipient
·         * ways of presenting the perceptive process in art, literature and media
·       * perception in the light of anthropology of experience ethics of reception: the role of the reader, voyeurism etc.
·        * role of cultural competences in experiencing works of culture
·        * recipient as a co-author (hypertext, interactive art)
·        * place of the recipient in the theory of literature and art
·        * recipient as an agent (contexts of theory of agency)
·        * phenomenon of aesthetic experience, its evolution (in theory and practice)
·        * perception in cognitive theories
·        *application of the mechanism of human perception in media (e.g. in advertising)
·        * perception versus development of identity
·        * perceptual processes in the context of the debate on sensuality/physicalness
·        * perception versus gender studies
·        * extravisual perception (e.g. sound studies)
·        * application of neuroesthetic in the research on literature and art
·        * „cyberperception” – illusion or a new kind of the receptive process?
·        * receptive processes in the new media theories and practices
·    * transformation of the category of media-frendliness/media attention/media coverage versus the receptive processes
·        * various forms of receptive practices (remix culture, fan fiction, adbusting etc.)
·        * receptive practices versus the Internet marketing
·        * problem of AI (artificial intelligence)
·        * robotic art and software studies in the context of the debate on perception
·        * transgenic art and bio-art versus the role of the recipient/audience
·      * virtual worlds, hybrid worlds (operation of the immersive spaces and the so-called intelligence ambients)
·        * perception as a neurobiological process
